The treatment of pelvic health problems has exploded in the field of physical therapy. Finally, there are specialists that can take the time to understand your intimate problems and connect the dots to help you feel better. Intimate issues are extremely distressing, especially when you don’t seem to be able to get answers that make sense to you.
Let’s talk sex first. Everyone’s curious, what’s normal, what’s not?Is it supposed to hurt? A little bit? A lot? Easy answer here…NO, NO and NO. NEVER. EVER.
Why does it hurt? Well this is when it gets tricky, because the truth is, sex can hurt for a lot of different reasons even though it shouldn’t. Many of the reasons why sex hurts can be helped by physical therapy. The vagina is supported and surrounded by muscles…physical therapists know muscles! We know when they’re tense, weak, tight or triggered. They can be all these things for all sorts of reasons. Sorry, but Kegel’s are often not the answer, they may even be making you feel worse. We can help you figure out what’s going to best for you.
Bladders can be just as confusing. If you have leaks, the causes can be variable. Yes, sometimes it’s weakness after childbirth, but so often, surprisingly, it’s not. Stress incontinence? Urge incontinence? Both? None of it’s “normal” and none of it’s OK. Everyone’s situation is unique. We take the time to understand exactly what’s happening for you at any phase of life. And then, we problem solve and treat.
Bowel problems? Not the easiest thing to talk about. But this is what we do and it’s a safe place to do it! Muscles and how you use them have a lot to do with this process too and so can stress. We can help with both.
The first thing to do is to have the courage to reach out. Understanding what’s going on will be the first step on your journey to feeling better.
