what can i expect in a heart rate variability session?

Most of us are fully aware that stress can be interfering with our daily lives both physically and emotionally. We understand and acknowledge that stress can give us high blood pressure, stomach ache or migraines, yet instead of treating the stress to alleviate the origin of our maladies, we take pills to merely quiet the symptoms. Hhhmmm.

Heart Rate Variability is a measure of the health and balance of your nervous system. Each of us has a set point that we work from that may not be ideal. Maybe our nervous system is heightened because of something that happened in our distant past or something that is happening in our lives right now.

Either way, it is incredibly important for our mental and physical health to get our nervous systems back to a healthy set point. It is one of those simple but not easy things to do.

I believe it’s not just the obvious diseases of stress that are hurting us. Our nervous systems are sub-consciously running the show. If we can learn how to settle or sooth ourselves, without having to figure it all out consciously, we can feel so much better.

The Heart Math tools that I use with you in an HRV session will do just that.

You’ll leave your session with a better understanding of your nervous system and how it may be impacting your life. You will be able to watch a monitor and see your nervous system balance out while you employ certain learned techniques. It is incredibly validating and empowering to see happen.

All it takes is some understanding of what is going on and then clipping a small device to your ear so that we can monitor your HRV. I will also conduct a one minute test to establish the health of your nervous system so that you know where you are starting from. Studies show that three, 5 minute self guided sessions per day can change your set point in just 3 months.

You just have to be ready to take action!

what can i expect in a pelvic health session?

Pelvic Health care is an extremely specialized form of physical therapy. We will proceed with all aspects of your care with the utmost sensitivity based on you as an individual.

The session will begin with time for a full history from you so that I can understand your challenges and perhaps understand where they may stem from. That said, you need only share what you feel ready to share. All sessions are held with strict confidence.

We will then discuss options for examination. This may include a pelvic floor muscle exam, but this will ultimately be your choice once you understand more of what that involves for you.

Resolving your symptoms will be by way of a partnership between the two of us but will involve education and learning. You will heal once you understand your body and your nervous system.

Interventions may include soft tissue manual therapy, joint mobilizations, trigger point dry needling, electrotherapy, use of a vaginal trainer kit, pelvic floor strengthening and/or core stability work. There will almost certainly be ideas I have for you to work on things yourself at home.

Ultimately, we’ll make a plan that works for you.

what can I expect in a regular physical therapy session?

Your physical therapy session will begin with me listening to you while you tell me about the symptoms you are experiencing. A full history is essential for successful treatment.

Following this history, a physical examination will follow to evaluate your body so that we can address symptoms to provide immediate relief, but also look for and understand movement and holding patterns that may have contributed to your problem in the first place.

Treatment is aimed at bringing as much immediate relief as possible, but it’s just as important to help you understand how you can prevent your problem from recurring. To achieve this result we will look at optimizing your habits and movement patterns so that we can problem solve together.

If stress and anxiety is contributing to your physical pain, interventions to calm your nervous system may be used. This may include Cranial Mobilization (this is different from Cranio-Sacral Therapy) and Visceral Manipulation.

We can also work on self help techniques to help you calm your own nervous system in every day life. I have soft ware that allows you to experience, in real time, how it feels to have a balanced nervous system.
